George R. Bulger, a cherished member of the Weymouth/Hingham community passed away suddenly on January 19, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on November 6, 1935, in Boston, Massachusetts, George's life was marked by a profound dedication to education, community service, and the arts.
George's academic journey began at the Carmelite Junior Seminary, after which he attended Boston College, where he graduated with a BA degree. George joined the ROTC program while at BC and after graduation served at Fort Devins and in France for four years. Following his military service, George pursued further education at Boston University, obtaining his master's degree in social work. During this time, he worked for the state of Massachusetts Welfare Department where he played a significant role in establishing vital programs such as public daycare.
With his master's degree in hand, George joined the Quincy Public Schools as a school adjustment / guidance counsellor, a position he held until his retirement. He was immensely proud of his work there, where he made lifelong friends and positively impacted countless students' lives. Throughout his career, George's intelligence and outgoing demeanor endeared him to colleagues and students alike.
Not only was George committed to education, but he also held a deep passion for the arts. He served as a board member and Treasurer of the Fine Arts Chorale, enriching the musical landscape of his community. Singing in the chorale for two decades. He enjoyed sharing the joy of classical music, theatre, and films with his wonderful companion, Dr. Elizabeth Bostrom. Their friendship is one of inspiration, as they traveled the world together and created cherished memories.
George leaves behind a legacy that celebrates friendship and community bonds cultivated over many years. His dedication to his profession, his family, and his interests in the fine arts will continue to resonate within the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.
George is predeceased by his long-term companion Dr. Elizabeth Bostrom. He is survived by his nephew Gregory Bulger and his husband Richard Dix who were lifelong close friends and by his nephew John and his wife Nancy Clancy who so ably cared for George to keep him independent over the last seven years as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Sunday 1/26/2025 from 2-5 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte. 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). A Celebration of Life service will be held in the funeral home at 11AM 1/27/2025 prior to the Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM in St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Boston. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of George may be made to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Development office, 301 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston MA 02115 or the Fine Arts Chorale PO Box 164 South Weymouth, MA 02190
