Frederick J. Sheehan, a lifelong resident of Weymouth, passed away peacefully at home on June 27 at the age of 88.
Mr. Sheehan was the beloved son of the late Fred and Mary (Keaveny) Sheehan, and is survived by his wife of 58 years, Claire and their children Frederick Sheehan Jr. and his wife Margaret of Braintree, Kathleen Speredelozzi and her husband Jim of Weymouth, Michael Sheehan and his wife Maureen of Norwell, and Mariclaire Buckley and her husband John of Hingham. He was the grandfather of Anna and Frederick Sheehan III, Faith and Claire Speredelozzi, Catherine and Michael Sheehan, and William, Andrew, Henry, and Edward Buckley. He is also survived by his sister and brother, Catherine Flaherty of Braintree and John Sheehan of South Weymouth and his cousin Jack Sheehan of North Weymouth.
After graduating from Weymouth High School in 1941, Mr. Sheehan enlisted in the United States Army where he saw heavy action in France and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Upon returning, he graduated from Boston University and received his J.D. from Boston College Law School and later, his M.B.A. from Babson College. In the early 1950s, he served as an FBI agent in Virginia and West Virginia, leaving to become a seminarian at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton. He left St. John’s after a year, and opened his law practice in Quincy where he specialized in estate planning. He is a past president of the Norfolk County Bar Association.
In 1958, at the age of 34, Mr. Sheehan was appointed State Comptroller by Governor Foster Furcolo, and he later served as Chairman of the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission and Assistant Attorney General where he headed up the Contracts Division. From 1972 to 2012, he served on the Board of Directors and Board of Investment of South Shore Bank. He also served on the Board of Public Works in Weymouth and was Chairman of the Board of Cardinal Cushing School and Training Center in Hanover.
Until last spring, Mr. Sheehan taught French and Latin to the students of Saint Jerome School in North Weymouth.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Jerome Church, Bridge Street, North Weymouth, MA on Monday, July 1 at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held at the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home at 40 Sea Street, North Weymouth, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 30.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Jerome School, 598 Bridge Street, North Weymouth, MA 02191.
