Francis R. Mahony Jr.

Francis Ronan Mahony Jr. 91, of Hingham, MA passed away July 27 at Allerton House in Hingham.

A man of varied interests, passions and pursuits, Frank was born and raised in Lowell MA, the son of the late Alice W. and Dr. Francis R. Mahony. Frank attended Keith Academy and graduated from Philips Andover Academy before attending Harvard College. His college career was interrupted for two years when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944. He served as a quartermaster aboard the USS Gold Star in the Pacific Theater. Upon discharge from the Navy he returned to Harvard and graduated in1948 as a member of the class of 1947. After college Frank found work with the State Department of Public Health and then the engineering firm Camp, Dresser, McKee. In 1965 Frank founded his own business, F.R. Mahony & Associates, representing manufacturers of equipment and processes in the then nascent field of wastewater and pollution control, consulting with industry and government as well as developing new products. He was very proud that the business he established still prospers today. Frank was a Life Member of the Water Environment Federation and the New England Water Environment Association, for which he served as President in 1969. A resident Hingham for 61 years, Frank served the Town as a member of the Planning Board and the Zoning Board. A longtime member of the Hingham Yacht Club and Cohasset Golf Club, he was an avid and lifelong sailor and skier, an enthusiastic golfer and late in life a die hard bowler. In younger days Frank enjoyed treading the boards as a member of the Cohasset Dramatic Club.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Kay “Kate” (Jensen), sons Francis R. III and wife Bryan of June Lake, CA and Andrew J. and wife Mary of Norwell, MA and a daughter Kathryn J. of Amherst, MA. He is also survived by two grandchildren Julia and Gabrielle, his brother Dr. David and his wife Joanna of Brockton and several cousins, nieces, grandnieces and nephews. Frank was preceded in death by his sister Elena Lawler.

Visiting Hours will be held from 4 pm. until 8 pm. at Pyne Keohane Funeral Home 21 Emerald St. Hingham, MA on Monday July 31st . A funeral mass will be held at St. Paul Church in Hingham on Tuesday August 1st at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Norwell Visiting Nurses Association, 120 Longwater Dr. Norwell, MA 02061.
