Evelyn H. Pellegrini

Evelyn Helen Pellegrini, of Hingham, was born on August 24, 1925, and died peacefully on July 1, 2018, at the glorious age of 92… we should all be so lucky.   Beloved wife of the late Lucio Pellegrini and caring mother of the late Wayne Pellegrini and Baby Pellegrini.  Survived by her daughter Valerie Gabriel and her husband Michael of Hingham, son-in-law Matthew Newell and his wife Marilyn of Wakefield, granddaughter Bridget Blasetti and her husband Mark of Hingham, grandson Matthew Newell Jr. and his wife Jennifer of Hingham, sister Rose Pilgrim of Milton, and four great granddaughters Sydney, Haley, Ryley and Perry of Hingham.

Evelyn, with various aliases that included Ev, Ma, Gram, and GG (Great Grandmother), was strong, independent, hard-working, generous, smart, entrepreneurial, money-wise, caring, had an infectious laugh, and was in love with her family… especially her four great granddaughters with whom she lived the last ten years of her life. Up until suffering a stroke in her early 80s and before moving in with her granddaughter Bridget and family, she often worked multiple jobs, the most recent of which was at Gosnold on Cape Cod and St. Patrick’s Church in Falmouth.  She also dabbled in the dry-cleaning business and owned and operated a sub shop.  She loved to cook, whether it was for her own family or for the priests at St. Patrick’s.

She wasn’t just competitive in the business world.  She always kept tabs on her great granddaughters’ basketball happenings, and whenever they walked into the house her very first question to any and all of the four of them was… “Did ya win?”  She loved playing poker, often going “all in” with nothing, not because she was good at bluffing, but because she loved the thrill of building a big pot.  She frequented the local bingo parlors and watched sports of all kinds.  All of these activities she did mostly with her own family, more often than not giving her great granddaughters any required buy-ins and entry fees, but in the end often winning her own money right back… we should all be so lucky.

Evelyn passed away peacefully at the Queen Anne’s Nursing Home in Hingham while her two primary care givers over the last ten years, her daughter Valerie and her granddaughter Bridget, were right there by her side.  GG was aware of what was happening to her, but being a woman of God, was not afraid, as she said her goodbyes, rested her own hand inside Bridget’s, and was surely welcomed by the loving hand of God.   As much as with any good life, our legacies are not so much defined by all the stormy weather and rising and falling tides we need to endure, but by the ripples and wakes of family and love that we leave trailing behind… we should all be so lucky.  “Because someone we love is in Heaven… there’s a little bit of Heaven in our home.”  We will all miss you GG!

Any arrangements will respectfully be private, but Ev’s family would encourage anyone that is interested to make a donation to the Hingham Senior Center, where Gram frequented and very much enjoyed the caring and fun nature of the volunteers and spent many happy hours there engaged with all kinds of fun and energetic people, just like herself.
