Eugene K. McCarthy January 15, 2012 at the Milton Hospital following a long illness. Gene grew up in Winthrop and moved to Quincy in 1968 where he worked as a government inspector at the General Dynamics Shipyard. He later graduated from Fitchburg State College and was a teacher in the Quincy Public Schools. Gene was a proud member of the Eire Society, the Campion Club, the Catholic Alumni Sodality and the Catholic Labor Guild. Gene was a proud United States Navy Veteran. He was a member of St Ann’s Parish in Wollaston where he was active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was also a a lector and sang in the church choir. He loved his Irish heritage and derived much joy from his many trips to Ireland over the years. He was completely devoted to his family and his faith and was true to both to the last. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret (Whelan) McCarthy, his son, Eugene K. McCarthy Jr of Norwood and his daughter, Maura McCarthy and her husband Joel Minnich and their children, Graham and Greta Belle Minnich of Arlington. He was the much loved brother in law of Susan and the late Michael Walsh of Killarney, Brid and Brendan Porter of Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, Sr. Mary Whelan and Sr. M Bernadine of Australia and the late Joseph Whelan of Co. Clare. He was the brother of John McCarthy and Mary McCarthy of Winthrop and was loved by many nieces, nephews, and cousins here and in Ireland. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St. WOLLASTON on Thursday at 9:15am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Ann’s Church Thursday at 10am. Visiting Hours Wednesday 4-8pm. Interment in Pine Hill Cemetery, Quincy.
