Eugene Gilbert Dinneen, Sr. “Gil” of Hingham, formerly of South Weymouth, Rye Beach, NH, and Hutchinson Island, FL, died peacefully on August 24, 2009 at South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth. Reunited in death with his beloved wife of 58 years Eleanor (Powers) Dinneen, Gil was the proud and loving father of Eugene G. Dinneen, Jr. “Chip”and his wife Marie of Hanover, Susan Dinneen Toomey and her husband Jack of Hingham and Jeffrey B. Dinneen, also of Hingham. Brother of the late John and Robert Dinneen. He was the devoted grandfather of Scott Dinneen and his wife Kerry, Jim Dinneen and his wife Sarah, John, Colin, Elizabeth and Kyle Toomey, and Casey and Alexandra Dinneen. He was Great Grandfather of Jameson, Max and Mya Dinneen. A U.S. Marine veteran of WWII in the South Pacific, Mr. Dinneen was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained on the island of Saipan. Originally from Dorchester, he was with the Boston Fire Department for 9 years. Mr. Dinneen subsequently worked as a business owner in the restaurant and auto parts businesses. As an accomplished golfer, he was the member of several clubs and introduced many to the game he loved. Past member of the Knights of Columbus and communicant at Resurrection Parish in Hingham. Visiting hours Wednesday from 4 to 8 in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.),HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15am on Thursday prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at Resurrection Parish, 1057 Main Street, Hingham on Thursday at 10 am. Burial in Washington St. Cemetery, Norwell. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Simon of Cyrene Society, P.O. Box 54, South Boston, MA 02127.
