Eugene D. Shaw PhD. LTC US Army (Ret.)
HINGHAM, MA – Eugene D. Shaw known to his friends and family as “Pete” passed away on March 9, 2015 in the 89th year of his life.
Born and raised in Burlington, Iowa, a Veteran of WWII awarded the Bronze Star for actions in the Battle of the Bulge, Combat Infantry Badge and numerous other campaign battle stars. After receiving a B.S. in Liberal Arts from Northwestern University he entered the U. S. Army Medical Service Corps during the Korean Conflict 1951 – 1953. Pete continued active military service and higher education receiving a PhD. in Microbiology / Virology Sciences from the State University of Iowa in 1963. Assigned to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 1963 -1970 retired as a Lt. Colonel. His civilian career involved research in Rubella and Hepatitis studies securing a patent with Ortho Diagnostics and continued infectious studies at Wampole Laboratories in NJ and retired from the industry in 2006.
Pete is predeceased by his wife Elizabeth (O’Brien) Shaw of 55 years and survived by his four sons Douglas and Virginia Shaw, Gregory Shaw and Parra Tomkins, Kevin and Tammy Shaw and Daniel Shaw. Pete and Betty enjoyed their five grandchildren William, Elizabeth, May Ann, Cliodna and Thalia.
Pete was active throughout his life in the Lion’s Club serving as an officer, a Director and Mentor and held numerous positions in local and national Veteran’s groups. For a number of years he has had the honor of placing a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. Funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:30 AM in Old Ship Church, Hingham. Burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Grand Pup Tent of Massachusetts, Military of the Cootie, P.O. Box 31, Halifax, MA 02338-0031 in support of patients in VA Hospitals and the Old Soldiers Homes in Massachusetts.
