Peters, Esther (Metro) of South Boston and Quincy, age 87, died on Sunday, May 24th in the home of her son Louie Peters from an ongoing struggle with heart disease and more recently, Alzheimer’s. She was the daughter of the late Dhoska and Evangjlina Metro. Beloved wife of the late Charles (Kocho) Peters who predeceased her in 1988. Loving mother of Bill and Mimi Peters of Quincy, Louie and Linda Peters of Squantum and John and Reggie Peters of Sandwich. Doting grandmother to Jim and Cara Peters of Raynham, Bob and Agnes Peters of East Boston, Michael and Nina Peters of Plymouth, Brian and Carla Peters of South Boston, Kelly and Larry Peck of Andover and Tom and Annie Broderick of Scituate. Proud great grandmother to Brittany and Stephen Peck; Justin, Mia and Gregory Broderick; Madison and Justin Peters; Robert Yandle and Jake Peters. She is also survived by her loving sister Demitra Popovich of South Boston and sisters-in-law, Mildred Metro of Cambridge and Eleanor Metro of Milton. She was the devoted sister to the late Peter Metro, Charles Metro and Evelyn Metro. Esther was born in Trebica, Albania and emigrated with her family to the United States at age 6. Encouraged by her mother to write phonetically to family in Albania, Esther maintained connections with her family left behind after the country was taken over by communism. These letters spawned a lifetime commitment by Esther to do as much as she could to send money and clothing to family in the poorest county in Europe. She visited Albania on at least 7 different occasions throughout a 25-year period. With the breakup of communism in 1991, she was on a mission to send as many boxes of clothing, non-perishable food, and medicine to family and friends. When her family was allowed to come to the states for visits and subsequently with permanent visas, Esther opened her house to many relatives and friends while they sought employment and permanent housing. As one family left, there was always another family waiting to start their stay. Esther enjoyed cooking ethnic Albanian food and was featured in a Boston Sunday Globe article on 12-15-02. She cooked many dishes that were sold at her church’s yearly fundraising event. Everyone knew Esther made the best spinach pie and desserts and her baked goods would sell out first. She had a wonderful sense of humor, a can-do attitude, was an adventurous traveler, and a tireless supporter of her church. Most of all, she was an example to her children and grandchildren on how the actions of one person can make a difference in the lives of many. She will always be lovingly remembered and sorely missed for her joy and passion for living. Donations in her memory can be made to the Saint George Albanian Orthodox Cathedral, , 523 East Broadway, South Boston, MA 02127 or to the VNA Hospice Care, 100 Sylvan Road, G-500, Woburn, MA 01801. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY, on Wednesday 4-8 PM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday at 9:30 AM prior to the Funeral Mass in Saint George Albanian Orthodox Cathedral , 523 E. Broadway, South Boston at 10:30 AM. Burial in Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston.
