Esther A. Diangelo

Esther A. Gentilucci DiAngelo, age 88, a longtime Weymouth resident, died peacefully at her home on October 21, 2015 surrounded by her loving family.

Beloved wife of 56 years of the late Captain Leo R. DiAngelo of the Weymouth Police Department and devoted mother to her three sons, Robert DiAngelo and his wife Linda of Weymouth, Richard DiAngelo and his wife Susan of Westford, and Leo J. DiAngelo of Weymouth.  Esther is predeceased by her parents, Giuseppe and Elvira (Sabastiani) Gentilucci, her step-mother Lisa Cocco, and her sister Eleanor Keith. “Nana” is also survived by her adoring grandchildren Lisa of NYC, Robbie of Quincy, Rachel and Ricky of Westford and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Born in Wakefield, Esther spent her early years at Wyley Place and in Quincy before moving to Weymouth where she graduated from Weymouth High School in 1945.  Esther continued her studies at Burdett College and upon graduation worked as an executive secretary at Collier’s Magazine followed by United Shoe Machinery before she met Leo, the love of her life, with whom she married and started a family. Esther was a nurturing wife and mother who enjoyed oil painting, playing cards, cooking and baking; she was especially known for her holiday trays of Italian biscotti. She also relished her summers spent in Plymouth and Wareham at the family cottages, antiquing and spending many happy moments with her grandchildren at Pinehurst Beach.

As the family historian, Esther loved sharing stories of her many memories as a young girl growing up among Italian immigrants and of her treasured cousins back in Italy whom she kept in contact with throughout her life.  In 2003, Esther and Leo traveled back to Italy to visit her family in Piedimordenti and his family in Borbona.  Esther and her sister Eleanor introduced their children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren to their Italian relatives forever connecting a new generation of cousins.  Esther will always be remembered for her quick-witted sense of humor, sage advice, wise life lessons and for her exceptional Italian cooking and baking.  Most importantly, she will be remembered for her generous love and kind heart.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 3-7 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home EAST WEYMOUTH at 3 Charles Street (corner of Charles & Middle Street). Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Monday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Jerome Church, Weymouth at 10 AM. Burial in Old North Cemetery, Weymouth.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Esther’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
