Elizabeth M. (Cotter) Mazzucchelli in Worcester, formerly of Quincy and Cape Cod, died peacefully on September 21, 2023 surrounded by her loving family at the age of 86. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph L. Mazzucchelli, sister of Helena Poplasky of Quincy, Alicia Heneghan and her husband Paul of Bridgton, ME, Margaret Dawe and her husband John of Dunstable and the late Noel Cotter and Bridget O’Malley. She was also the sister-in-law of the late John O’Malley and George Poplasky. Betty is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Betty was born and raised in Aglish, County Waterford, Ireland. Betty graduated from the Sefton General Hospital School of Nursing in Liverpool, England. Betty immigrated to America in 1961 joining her sisters in Somerville. Betty worked as a charge nurse at Barnstable County Hospital, an operating room nurse at Falmouth Hospital and Faulkner Hospital and later for Cape Cod VNA. Betty enjoyed people and hosted many guests at The Elms Bed & Breakfast in West Falmouth which she owned and operated with her husband Joe. She created a warm and inviting atmosphere for all that entered her home.
An active woman of faith, Betty served multiple roles including parish nurse at Christ the King Church, Mashpee and as President of the Fall River Diocese Council of Catholic Women. Betty made a number of medical mission trips to Honduras with Cape Cares. Bishop Daniel Cronin awarded Betty the Marian Award in recognition of personal dedication and loyal service to the Church in the Diocese of Fall River.
Betty also enjoyed gardening, traveling especially back “home” to Ireland, and most of all spending time with her beloved family. She had a special bond with her sisters. Betty will be remembered as a woman of grace, strength and unwavering love for her family. Let her legacy serve as a reminder to all to cherish our loved ones, to be kind and generous, and to never lose sight of the values that make life truly meaningful.
