Eleanor E. (Walsh) Leary, 93, of East Weymouth passed away quietly at home on February 4. She was born in Quincy and lived there for many years before moving with her family to East Weymouth in 1968 to the home her grandfather built in the early 1900s.
Beloved wife of the late Daniel J. Leary, Eleanor is survived by her children, Paul D. Leary and his wife Bethany of Plymouth, Barbara L. Sullivan and her husband Richard of Hingham, Brian C. Leary and his wife Nancy of Weymouth, and Robert J. Leary and his wife Nancy of East Weymouth. She leaves ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Elizabeth A. Walsh of Watertown and her five children, the family of Eleanor’s late brother James R. Walsh. She will be greatly missed by the staff and residents of Allerton House in Weymouth where she enjoyed the final five years of her life.
Eleanor graduated from Quincy High School in 1936, continuing on to Bridgewater State Teachers’ College where she majored in Elementary Education. After graduation in 1940, she was a substitute teacher for one week and promptly decided to end her teaching career. She started as a Service Representative for New England Telephone in 1941 and worked at the Quincy office until her marriage in 1947. She worked part time at the Telephone Company as her children grew older, then returned for several years of full time work at the Verizon business office in Weymouth, retiring in 1982. Eleanor was a longtime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Altar Guild of Immaculate Conception Parish. Eleanor and Dan were both devoted Red Sox fans and imparted their love of baseball to their children and grandchildren. After retirement, they traveled to Florida in March for many years to enjoy Red Sox spring training games. Dan passed away in 2000 and since that time, Eleanor’s greatest love was spending time with her family.
