Edward J. Doherty

Edward J. Doherty of Braintree, died February 8, 2022.  The beloved husband of the late Therese (Fostello) Doherty. Devoted father of Ann Doherty-Stuart of Quincy, Dennis Doherty of AZ., Patricia Kelley and her husband Jack of Milford, Kathleen Maleiko and her husband Gerard of Mansfield, Colleen Doherty of RI, Mary Doherty of Milton and the late Edward Doherty. Brother of Brian Doherty of Ohio, Cherished Papa of Valerie Doherty-Stuart, Erin McNeil and her husband Scott, James Maleiko and his wife Anna, Ryann Kelley and her fiance Nate Holmes, Bridget Maleiko, Jonathan Maleiko, Kathryn Maleiko, Taylor Doherty and her spouse Anna Lawrence, Zachary and Zoe Doherty. Great Grandfather of Kelsie, Keagan, Kinley, Isabella, Colin, Donovan, Bernadette and Callum. 

Edward “Ed” James Doherty, of Braintree, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2022 with his loving family by his side. He lived a full life and was called home to be with the Lord at the age of 92. 

Ed was born on November 12, 1929 and was the son of the late Joseph Doherty and Bridget Doherty (McLaughlin) who were born in Ireland and came to America in the early 1900s. 

Ed was raised in Dorchester and very proud of it! He began his service to the U.S. Navy in 1948 and was honorably discharged in 1955. During the Korean War, Ed served on the USS Rochester (CA-l24) and received myriad awards including the “Ambassador for Peace” award and the Korean Service Medal. 

Ed married Therese M. Fostello in November 1952. They began their life together in Quincy and were blessed with seven children. While Ed was proud of being from Dorchester, he raised his family in Braintree and lived there for 62 years. A highlight of his life was watching his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren playing sports and taking trips to Sunset Lake. Ed enjoyed swimming, watching Boston sports teams, especially the Patriots, and cheering on Tom Brady. Ed loved his Irish heritage, and family and friends will fondly remember him when they hear the sound of bagpipes and Irish ballads. 

 Ed kept sharp and quick-witted by solving crosswords, completing jigsaw puzzles, speeding through word searches, and creating models of historic battleships. He always had a joke or pun to contribute to any conversation. This was apparent hours before his death when one of the nurses asked him if he was chilly, and he joked that “Chile” was in South America.  

Ed was known for his generosity. He donated to many charities and especially loved donating to the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, as he passionately believed no child should suffer from cancer. He was a man of faith and a member of the Roman Catholic Church. 

 In his later years, Ed formed loving connections with the staff at Grove Manor Estates Retirement Community where he entertained all with his jokes and enthusiastically participated in playing Bingo where he proved to be quite the competitor. His family is forever grateful to the staff at Grove Manor Estates for their devotion and care for Ed. 

Funeral Services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Edward may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
