Edward Joseph Keough, 80, of Sandwich was a man of few words but many subtle, dry jokes, a diner with a limited palette but an appetite for first-class restaurants, and a fisherman who found great joy in sharing his knowledge with his children and grandchildren but also spending lazy summer afternoons on his boat with family and friends.
He died Thursday at Royal Cape Cod Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bourne.
Eddie, Ed or Grumpy, as he was known to various people, was born in Dorchester and graduated from Cathedral High School in Boston and Boston College. He worked in management for New England Telephone Co., retiring early and taking his family on several memorable vacations, including Hawaii, Aruba and St. Maarten. He was generous with gifts, loved a good Manhattan and instilled in his daughter a passion for the Red Sox, Patriots and pro wrestling.
He leaves behind his beloved family, including his wife of 41 years, Ida (Lee) Keough of Sandwich; daughter Kathleen Keough of Sandwich; stepdaughter Susan Luke and her husband Ken of Chestnut Hill; stepson Kevin Gee and his wife Lauri of Scituate; and grandchildren Lauren, Kenneth and Leanne Luke and Ryan and Cameron Gee.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., Quincy. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by a private burial service in Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston.
