Shields, Edward A., Sr. of Hingham, October 7, 2005. Beloved husband of the late Mary K. (Hope). Loving father of Edward “Ned”, Jr. of Norwell, Peter and his wife May of Natick, Thomas and his wife Patricia van Mierlo of Hingham and Paul “Sam” and his wife Susan of of Middleboro. Grandfather of Charles and his wife Rachel of RI, Michael of Newton, Erin, Brigham, Patrick; all of Natick, Ben of Greenfield, Mary Ellen and Katherine; both of Middleboro. Ned was very active at St. Paul’s Parish in Hingham Square for many years. He served as an usher and participated in several of the church’s activities. Mr. Shields served the Town of Hingham on several elected posts over the years. He served on the Recreation Commission during the 1950’s, The Planning Board during the 1960’s and 1970’s and the Town Sewer Commission during the 1970’s and 1980’s. He was an avid sailer his whole life and was a member of the Hingham Yacht Club for over 25 years. Ned had a passion for collecting antique automobiles especially Beach Buggies. He was a member of the Massachusetts Beach Buggy Association. Mr. Shields had a great love of books and reading. He enjoyed naval history and just about any other subject he could learn about at the Hingham Public Library. When he could no longer check out books on his own the library volunteers would bring the books to his home. Above all else in his life, Ned was a devoted family man. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM Tuesday at 9 AM. Funeral Mass in Saint Paul’s Church, Hingham at 10 AM. Visiting hours Monday 4-8 PM. Burial in Saint Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham. Donations in memory of Mr. Shields may be made to Hingham Public Library, 66 Leavitt Street Hingham, MA 02043.
