Mrs. Dorothy K. (Kennedy) Powell, of Hingham, passed peacefully away at home surrounded by loving family on June 7, 2022. She was 97.
Dorothy was the daughter of Irish immigrants John and Margaret (Kelly) Kennedy and grew up in Dorchester. She lived an impactful life filled with diverse experiences. Her career started at the Dept. of Justice, where she met and married George Keim, Esq. while working with top security clearance on government projects. After his passing, she worked in the Massachusetts Senate Ways and Means Committee where she met and married Michael J. Powell, an MBTA executive. She raised seven children before returning to work various jobs in banking, law and private companies, ending her career volunteering at the Hingham Senior Center.
Dorothy was the quintessential matriarch of her large family and she did everything with class. Her many travels took her throughout the United States, Europe, Russia and to the Barcelona Olympics. She loved entertaining family and friends for holidays and celebrations, and she took enthusiastic interest in her family’s sporting events and accomplishments.
Dorothy was the loving mother of Teresa Curley and her husband Michael of Duxbury, Michael Powell and his wife Janis of Milton, Donna McCone and the late Kevin McCone of Hingham, Patricia Powell of Abington, Barbara Nowak and her husband Wesley of Milton, John Powell and his wife Jill of Hingham, Francis Powell and his wife Megan of Hingham. She was a loving grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by husbands George Keim and Michael J. Powell, and sisters Mary Monroe, Katherine Crowley and Margaret Kennedy.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family during visiting hours on Wednesday, June 15 from 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital).
Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 9:45 AM on Thursday, June 16 prior to the Funeral Mass in Church of the Resurrection, Hingham at 10:30 AM. Burial will be private at the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Hingham Senior Center 224 Central Street, Hingham, MA 02043.
