Donald L. Darling

Mr. Donald L. Darling of Weymouth, 67, died surrounded by love and family on April 12, 2018. Born in Paterson, N.J., and raised in Connecticut by his late parents, Dorothy and Donald C. Darling, Don was an insatiable learner with unrivalled tenacity. From an early age, he had a natural ability for hunting and fishing, and he was a celebrated member of the Rockville High School rifle team. An aspiring forester and an ROTC cadet, he enrolled at Colorado State University in 1968, where he ultimately earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Don found his calling in 1973 when he began what would become a 38-year career at retailer Filene’s Basement. A motivating force and passionate leader, he held various positions at the company over the years, most notably vice president and general manager of the flagship store, located in the historic Burnham Building in Boston’s Downtown Crossing, and as senior vice president of stores. More recently, he enjoyed a fulfilling career in real estate, selling residential property throughout the South Shore. He was an avid reader, loved walking the trails at Hingham’s World’s End, and was active in numerous charitable and local organizations.

Don was adored and sustained throughout his life by his family and friends. He was the world’s greatest dad and trusted adviser to Jason L. Darling and his wife, Katelyn, of Brockton, Lindsay B. Darling of Canton, and Mark A. Darling and his wife, Alicia, of Rockland. Brother of Scott W. Darling of Warwick, R.I., and the late Kathleen Ann Tetreault. Beloved companion of Jacqueline O’Hare of Weymouth. Former husband of Fern M. Darling of Whitman. Grandpa of Liliana, Dylan, and Paige. An affable and kind gentleman who provided love, support, and humor to us all, Don will be profoundly missed. “Indeed.”

Relatives, friends, and colleagues are invited to celebrate Donald’s life and say farewell during visiting hours on Saturday, April 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home Weymouth at 809 Main Street.
