Donald J. Edwards

Edwards, Donald J. of Hingham and Yarmouth Port, February 11, 2014, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with cancer.

Beloved husband of Rosemary (Clancy) Edwards of Yarmouth Port.  Loving father of Donald J. Edwards, Jr. and his girlfriend Kristin MacDonald, both of Hull, Susan Gubbins and her husband Patrick of Dennis, and Michael Edwards and his wife Seana of RI.  Brother of Frank Edwards and his wife Cathy of FL. Papa to Cara, Anna, Emma, and Matthew Gubbins & Drew, Brayden and Ellie Edwards.  Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Don graduated from Cornell University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. He worked for General Electric, after completing their management training program, and Arthur D. Little, before starting his own business Edwards Associates. His expertise was in Systems Scheduling, consulting with businesses all over the country. He was always passionate about his work and took his intellectual pursuits seriously. He was on the faculty at Boston University, Babson College, and Bryant University. Don always loved reading and he furthered his passion for learning by auditing classes at BU. Despite his well-developed intellect, it was his quiet integrity and emotional stability that stood out and attracted people to him.

Don met the love of his life, Rose Clancy, after graduating Cornell University and together they raised three children. They were happily married for 53 years, 43 years of which they spent in Hingham. Together they shared their spirituality and commitment to family, as well as their love of beaches, movies, and traveling.

Don and Rose shared their Catholic faith, worshiping at the Maryknoll community, at their home parish of St. Paul’s in Hingham, and most recently at St. Pius X in Yarmouth.

Don loved sports playing basketball and football and passed this down to his children always coaching them and supporting them. During the last two decades he enjoyed watching his grandchildren competing in sports and school activities. He spent hours in cold arenas watching hockey, he attended countless soccer games and tennis matches, he cheered on lacrosse, he attended children’s theatre, art shows, and graduations, and he even followed one grandchild to Paris. At heart, Don Edwards was a deeply committed family man, solid and dependable.

His generous spirit always encouraged, motivated, and supported his children and grandchildren to live a life of integrity. Don touched many lives, reaching out to extended family and friends, and he will be missed.

Don’s family would like to thank the many friends who helped him in his final year, the family who adored him, the many caregivers who eased his passing during the past week, particularly Anne Walsh and VNA Hospice.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 2-6 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 10:15 AM on Monday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Paul’s Church, Hingham at 11 AM. Burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham.

Donations in memory of Don may be made to Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, PO Box 302, Maryknoll, NY 10545-0302.
