David M. Blowers

Blowers, David M. of Hingham, died February 11, 2015.

David M. Blowers was born and raised in Quincy, MA in the Houghs Neck neighborhood.  He later moved to Hingham, MA where he raised his family and remained for 36 years.  A graduate of Quincy High School and Bridgewater State College, David began his career as a history teacher in Abington.  David’s love of history led him to discover fine art and antiques which became his life’s work.  His hobby of going to yard sales soon revealed that he had quite an eye for paintings, antique furniture, pottery and beyond.  His business grew and in 1975 he left teaching to pursue fine art dealing full time.  He spent years exhibiting at antique shows in Boston, New York and Florida.  Each May, July and September he could be found at the famous shows at Brimfield, MA. For a time he opened his own shop in downtown Hingham, and in later years he partnered with a friend to open Downer Auction Gallery in Wellesley.  His auctions were highly regarded and drew an international following.  David’s love of the arts extended well beyond antiques.  He loved to treat his family to trips to New York to see the latest Broadway shows, and he was passionate about all music, especially opera.  A close second to the arts was his love of sports and games.  He was an avid golfer, Boston sports fan and an unrivaled trivia player.  But David’s proudest moments were those spent with his family.  His hallmark was to always wear a hat or sweatshirt with the logo of one of his daughter’s colleges, which usually led to long conversations about “his girls”.  Wherever he traveled in life, he remained at heart a Quincy “Necker”, always drawn to the ocean.  His family perhaps most fondly remembers him in quiet moments by the sea, whether on vacations down the Cape, watching the surf during a storm at Nantasket Beach, or skipping rocks at sunset at Hull Gut.

David was the loving husband of Lois (Hannon) Blowers, and was the devoted father of Sarah Melia and her husband Steve, Alyssa Scordo and her husband George, and Hilary Jenison and her husband Lee, all of Hingham.  David was the son of the late Robert and Edythe (Williams) Blowers, and is the brother of Robert Blowers and his wife Carol of Harwich, and Janis Potter and the late Dan Potter of Forest Grove, OR.  He was the cherished grandfather of Jane, Charlie and Annie Melia, Georgie and Drew Scordo and Eloise Jenison.
