David E. Nobis

David E. Nobis passed away November 21, 2014 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston following complications from heart surgery.

He was a long-time resident of Hingham until moving to Scituate a year ago.  He was married to his beloved wife, Alyce (Wakem) Nobis for 42 years.  He leaves 3 children from a previous marriage, Jennifer Nobis (David Burney) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Janet Nobis (Edward Stiess) of Newport, R.I., Steven Nobis (Nancy Boorsma) of Fairport, N.Y., 7 grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law David and Dorothy Wakem of Caribou, Maine and many nieces and nephews.

Born in Lakewood, Ohio in 1929, he moved to Westfield, NY at the age of 11, graduating from high school and then attending Trinity Pawling School.  He was an alumnus of Alfred Technical College in Alfred N.Y.  David served in the U.S. Army in Laurel, Maryland and upon discharge in 1953 began a 25 year career in the dairy and food industry.  In 1984 he established his own real estate inspection business from which he retired in 2006.

David and his wife enjoyed traveling, especially out West.  He was an avid skier and sailor for many years and for all who knew him he relished the game of tennis.  Until his recent illness, David could be found at the courts whenever his partners beckoned.  He looked forward with pleasure to his bi-monthly game with his poker buddies.  A voracious reader, particularly of history, David cherished his garden and was everyone’s favorite consultant for whatever was ailing their landscape.  He was always on call in the neighborhood for broken tools, garden equipment and flat bicycle tires.  He was a member of the South Shore YMCA at Mill Pond and the Hingham Tennis Club.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Monday Dec. 1  from 4-8pm in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. Hingham.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday Dec. 2  at 10am in St. Paul’s Church 147 North Street, Hingham.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the So. Shore Visiting Nurse Association, 30 Reservoir Park Drive, Rockland, MA 02370.
