David Allen

David Allen¸ of Braintree, formerly of Norwell, 80 years old, passed away on 29 June2021.

Beloved husband of Alfreda “Freda” (Doherty).

David was the son of the late Ralph and Mary (Walsh) Allen of Braintree, Massachusetts.

Brother of Patricia Venti of Woodbridge, Virginia, Susan Bartick of Westbrook, Connecticut, Nancy Morningstar and her husband, John, of Easton, Massachusetts, Christine DeGozzaldi and her husband, Sam, of Little Deer Isle, Maine, and the late Catherine Clougherty.

Loving father of Barbara of Hull, Mark and his wife, Michelle, of West Bridgewater, and Christopher and his wife, Kym of Plymouth. Proud Papa to Sarah and her husband, Paul, Nicholas, Vanessa, Charlotte, Margaret, Maxwell, Sophia, Gabrielle, Audrey, and Weston. Proud Great-Grand Papa to Zinnia and Jack. David was a loving Father-in-Law, Uncle, Brother-in-Law and is survived by many nieces and nephews.

David grew up in Braintree with his sisters – Kay, Pat, Susan, Nancy, and Chris.  He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School, Archbishop Williams High School and matriculated to Boston College. As a student at Archies he was President of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and later when his children attended Archies, he ran the Bingo nights. David and his sisters (and many cousins) spent summers in East Harwich enjoying all that the Cape has to offer. He graduated from Boston College in 1962 with an accounting degree and obtained his Certified Public Accounting license.

His career in accounting included working for the “Big 8” and operating his own accounting firm.  David’s long career in accounting lasted until 2021, as he only retired early this year.  1962 was a milestone in David’s life- as this was the year he married his best friend Freda and they began their life long journey.

They raised three children in Norwell, Massachusetts – Barbara, Mark and Christopher.  David enjoyed volunteering for his children’s activities including – coaching Little League and Soccer (after studying a book from the library called “How to Coach Soccer”), teaching CCD, and an honorary Girl Scout leader.

He was also a Eucharistic Minister at St. Helen’s Church in Norwell for many years.   The family spent summers enjoying the Cape, New Hampshire, Maine and many camping adventures throughout the US and Canada including a boat trip through the Finger Lakes, NY– where Dangerous Dave may or may not have “run aground” a time or two.  David was also a philatelist and would collect commemorative stamps that were of special interest to his grandchildren.  David was a life-long Celtics fan – and it is accurate to say, “he bleeds green”. He passed this passion on to his children and grandchildren, and more than once took his grandchildren to the Garden in full Celtics gear and face paint.

David and Freda’s early adventures included many camping trips with their children and later extensive travel throughout the US and abroad.  They enjoyed going to the theater, ballroom dancing, bowling, traveling, movies, bike riding, golfing, playing board games and anything that involved their children, grandchildren and great children including cheering on their grandchildren at their many sporting events, recitals and graduations and beating them at board games and cards.

Disney was a favorite and they had the great privilege of enjoying Disney World with all 10 of their grandchildren. David was recently blessed to meet his second great-grandchild and first great-grandson. The memories are immeasurable, and David will be greatly missed by his family especially his loving wife!
