Charles P. “Charlie” Mooney, of Hingham, passed away peacefully after suffering a stroke, loving family at his side, on March 28, 2014, one day shy of his 79th birthday.
Beloved husband of the late Phyllis C. (Martucelli) Mooney, the couple were childhood sweethearts who grew up together in Neponset and shared 51 years of marriage. Charlie leaves sons Charles Jr. of Hingham, Christopher and wife Noreen of Needham, Neil and wife Nicole of Quincy, and daughter-in-law Janis of Weymouth. Loving grandfather to Patrick and fiancée Molly, Nora, Liam and Ryan. Brother to the late Joseph, and Robert K. of Arizona, and uncle to Peter Mooney and wife Tricia of Flint, Michigan. He also leaves dear friend Nancy O’Day of Weymouth.
Charlie was born in Dorchester and attended Christopher Columbus High School. He graduated from Boston College in 1956, and was commissioned a United States Navy officer, flying the famous Douglas Skyraider in VAW-12 from the U.S.S. Essex. After leaving the Navy he embarked on a successful career in the nascent computer software industry, eventually starting his own company with friend and business partner Kenneth Lammi of Hingham.
A Friend of Bill W.’s for nearly fifty years, Charlie organized AA meetings and groups and devoted much time to helping persons struggling with alcohol and other addictions. He was a familiar and beloved figure “in the halls,” and regularly counseled residents at Bridgewater State Hospital and other facilities.
Charlie was devoted to fitness and an avid runner who competed in several Boston Marathons. He loved ice hockey as a player, coach, and decades-long supporter of the Boston Bruins and Boston College Eagles. He was a voracious reader on a range of topics, who enjoyed a lively debate. He will be much missed.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Tuesday, April 1 from 4-8pm in the Pyne Keohane Home 21 Emerald Street (off Central St.) Hingham. A Celebration of Life service will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday at 9:15 prior to the Funeral Mass in the Church of the Resurrection Wednesday at 10am.
