Claffey, Charles E., Jr. of Weymouth formerly of Hingham, died on September 30, 2011 after a brief illness. Former husband of Patricia M. (Croto) Claffey of Hingham. Father of Neil Claffey and his wife Renae of Nashua, NH, Diana Claffey of Quincy and Daniel Claffey and his wife Catherine of Barrington, IL. Grandfather of Elias & Thomas Claffey. Charles graduated from Northeastern University where he had served as editor of its newspaper. After serving in the United States Army, he began working as a reporter at the Boston Globe, where he stayed for 35 years. He wrote for the editorial page and the arts, as well as reported on local,regional and national news. His assignments included Watergate, presidential campaigns and the Blizzard of 1978, for which he won an award. He enjoyed jogging, meditation, and reading. Charles was a frequent visitor to the Hingham Library. Friend of Bill W. He will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 5-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mr. Claffey may be made to The Hingham Public Library, 66 Leavitt St. Hingham, MA 02043.
