Charlene (Haupt) Mitchell

Charlene (Haupt) Mitchell “Mimi”, of Hingham, formerly of Katonah, NY, died peacefully under the wonderful care of the Pat Roche Hospice Home on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. She was 87. Mimi was courageous in her battle with Post-Polio Syndrome, and through this battle she proved herself stronger than her friends and family could have imagined.

Mimi was born in Los Angeles, California on April 17, 1936, and was the daughter of the late Charles Harkness Haupt and Dorothy (Snow) Haupt. Mimi was raised in Elizabeth, NJ and attended the Vail-Deane School, and she then went on to graduate from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.

Mimi had a strong love and understanding of everything related to nature, and her love for gardening lead her to be a leading member in the Bedford Garden Club, The Herb Society and the Rare Plant Society. She won numerous awards for her creative garden and flower designs and left a lasting mark on the gardening world. Mimi’s kind heart and love of nature extended to her love for animals, so much so that she raised baby ducklings in her vegetable garden and was always ready to support any animal in distress, whether it be an injured snapping turtle or an abandoned dog that was made a part of the family.

Mimi was also an expert knitter, and in her later years she became an avid quilter, making the most beautiful creations for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandson many times over. She was a master of her craft.

Mimi was the wife of the late Jacques August Mitchell III, who died in 1991. She was the devoted mother of Jacques A. Mitchell IV of Wayne, PA and Rebecca M. McLeod and her husband Curtis of Hingham, MA. Mimi was a proud and loving grandmother of Lindsey McLeod Stillwell and her husband John of Philadelphia, PA, Reed McLeod of Boston, MA,  Caroline Mitchell of San Diego, CA, Curtis McLeod of Washington, DC, and Jacques A Mitchell V of Philadelphia, PA. She was also the loving great grandmother of Jack Stillwell of Philadelphia, PA

Following cremation, Mimi’s funeral service and interment will be held privately at a later date.
