Catherine Devine

Devine, Catherine (Hernon) of Hingham, passed away peacefully November 12, 2014 surrounded by her loving family.

Kate was the daughter of Thomas Hernon and Delia (Lynch) Hernon, who immigrated to Boston from Ireland. Kate was born and raised in Jamaica Plain and graduated from Jamaica Plain High School. She received her Bachelors degree, then Master’s degree in Education from Teachers College of the City of Boston in 1942. Kate married her loving husband Hugh before he served in the Army during WWII. When Hugh returned stateside they bought a house in the Crow Point area of Hingham and resided in Hingham for the rest of their lives except for a short time when they moved to Cape Cod and Tequesta FL. Kate worked at Hingham High School teaching business and retired in 1979. Kate was a long time member of the Catholic Women’s Club, Crow Point Sailing Club, Hingham Yacht Club, and Hingham Garden Club and was very proud to have been instrumental in the organization and building of St. Paul’s School in Hingham. In her later years, she enjoyed golfing and playing cards with her family. 

Kate was predeceased by her beloved husband Hugh P. Devine. Loving mother to Patricia Flaherty and her husband Terence of Tequesta, FL, Joseph Devine and his wife MaryAnn of Scituate, Hugh T. Devine and his wife Noreen of Cohasset, Thomas Devine and his wife Christine of Duxbury, Stephen Devine and his wife Barbara of Hingham, Matthew Devine and his wife Nancy of Scituate, William Devine and his wife Marianne of Cohasset, and Ceci Hanlon and her husband Edward of Hingham. Beloved sister to Mary Clarke, Ann Hernon, and Winnie Tikkanen. Cherished grandmother to 28 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 3-7 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 10:00 AM on Monday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Paul’s Church, Hingham at 11 AM. Burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham.
