Downs, Betty Gayle (Lowther) of Dorset, VT died on December 01, 2009. Betty Gayle was raised in San Antonio, TX but has lived in 17 other locations throughout the country before residing in Dorset. She was an Oral Specialist for the hearing impaired and worked many years as a private tutor in this field. Her desire to help others also led her to become active for 35 years in P.E.O, a womens’ philanthropic organization. In addition to her community contributions she was also an avid needle pointer, great seamstress, gardener, collector of folk art and antiques and great cook. Her family describes her as a kind, creative, ambitious and intelligent woman. Betty Gayle was extremely well read and knowledgeable in music, English and history but her main passion was always her family. Beloved wife of 52 years to Raymond F. Downs of VT. Devoted mother of Daniel Downs and his wife Cindy of VT and Michael Downs and his wife Rachel of KS. Cherished grandmother of Andrew Downs and Nicole Grover. Loving sister of the late David Lowther and his wife Martha of TX. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours Wednesday, December 9, 2009, from 12 – 3 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), Hingham, MA. A Memorial Service will follow in the funeral home at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Betty Gayle Downs may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, c/o Dr. Richard Stone, Adult Leukemia Program M1B-17, 44 Binney Street, Boston, MA 02115.
