Bernice Sage Walsh

Bernice Sage Walsh died on September 10, 2013 in Quincy, MA.  Dearly loved daughter of the late James J and Catherine (Keegan) Sage.  She was born at home on May 13, 1936 in Waterford, Ireland in “the gloaming of a beautiful Irish evening” during an extended family stay in Ireland.  Her family returned to Boston in 1938 and moved to Merrymount in 1950.  She was a cheerleader and graduate of Quincy High School 1954.  Bernice worked in the Collector’s Office of Boston City Hall until her marriage in 1957.  She lived in Wollaston over 50 years and raised her family there.

Bernice was the mother of Melissa S. Blair and James P. Walsh, both of Duxbury, Jennifer C. Walsh of Wollaston, Elizabeth C. Smyth of Braintree, and George B. Walsh of Weymouth.  She was the wife of James F. Walsh of Wollaston and the grandmother of nine:  Courtney, Cameron, Kathryn and Christopher Walsh; Brendan, Bridget and Caroline Smyth; and Nicholas and Isabella Blair.  She was the mother-in-law of Donna Walsh and future mother-in-law of Rachel McCabe.  It was through them and all her cherished family that she found the recipes and purpose of her journey.

Bernice is also survived by her siblings, Mary M Simmons, Martha Donohue, and James J Sage, her life-long best friend, Loraine Magliozzi, her cousin William DeWolfe, many nieces and nephews, and her cousins in Ireland with whom she shared many of her happiest days both in her home here and in Ireland.   Bernice enjoyed theatre, art, reading, and a wide range of music.  She loved the poetry of Seamus Heaney, Yeats and Billy Collins, gardening, home decorating and Paris.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visitation on Friday, September 13 from 9-11am in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, Quincy, prior to the Funeral Service at 11:30am.  Burial will follow at the Sage family plot at New Calvary Cemetery, Mattapan.

In lieu of memorial donations or spiritual bouquets, it is Bernice’s hope that those wishing to honor her memory would perform an act of kindness in memory of her.
