Bartholomew J. Gray

Bartholomew J Gray, 89, of Quincy MA passed peacefully to eternal life on 25 August 2017 surrounded by his family. He was a beloved and devoted husband for 67 years to Ellen Gray. Loving Father to David Gray (Captain, USN (Ret.)) (wife Mary), of Clifton, VA, and Brendan Gray (Captain, USN (Ret.)), (wife Anne) of Reading, MA. Loving Grandfather (Poppy) to his granddaughters Corey and Chelsea Gray.

Barry (Bart) was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1928. He immigrated to the United States with his family, arriving in Boston in 1959. He worked two jobs for many years to care for his family. During the day, he worked for Gordon and Leader, as a master painter in several buildings in Boston’s financial district around 75 Federal St. As an accomplished painter, he mixed all colors by hand and was a faux artist matching wood to marble and turning steel doors into oak doors. At night, he worked at Harvard University. He lived and raised his family in Dorchester moving to Quincy in 1977. His proudest achievement was to see both his sons graduate as U.S. Naval Officers from the U.S. Naval Academy (1975, 1977). He adored his grandchildren and loved being a grandfather.

He always had a quick wit, a great story to tell and loved to keep you laughing with jokes. However, he will be most remembered for his kind heart, generous spirit, and his undying love and devotion to his family.

The burial will be held at a later date at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin, Ireland. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bart may be made to St. Ann’s Parish, 757 Hancock Street, Quincy MA 02170.
