Smith, B. Ethel (Farrington) of Hull, August 21, 2005. Wife of the late Harland W. Hawes and the late John E. Smith. Sister of the late Ruth Farrington. She was survived by numerous friends and relatives including Nicholas Bagshawe of Warrenton, NC, Susan Cooke of Atlanta, GA, Steven Barndollar of Portsmouth, NH, Hugh Barndollar of Tampa, FL, Sally, Rebecca and Melinda Caroline of AZ and Nancy, Matthew and Anne Mairs of AZ. Ethel attended Walnut Hill Academy in MA and graduated from Smith College in 1932. She also obtained a PhD from Columbia University in 1947. She worked extensively as a medical social worker in the polio epidemic in the 1930’s and 1940’s in North Carolina and Montana. Ethel was widowed from her first husband, Harland W. Hawes in 1955 and married John Eldredge Smith in 1959. Upon his death in in 1973, she lived alone at her summer residence in Hull, MA and winter residence in Delray Beach, FL. She was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, the New England Historic Genealogical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Flagon and Trencher Society. Ethel authored a number of published works on history and geneology including a book on doctresses in colonial America. She was a lover of animals and gave generously to various charities whose purpose was to help animals. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Graveside Service at The Pine Hill Cemetery in Sherborn, MA on Wednesday at 1PM. The family is receiving guests at Ethel’s Home in Hull on Tuesday evening from 5-7 PM. Donations in memory of Ethel may be made to the Hull Lifesaving Museum, 1117 Nantasket Ave., Hull, MA 02045 or to the Hull Seaside Animal Rescue League, PO Box 787, Hull, MA 02045.
