Arthur Francis Calnan, MD, of Scituate, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Thursday morning, Oct. 20. The husband of Jeanne E. (Faber) Calnan. He was 86. Arthur was born in Boston, the son of the late Augustine and Mary Calnan, and grew up in West Roxbury. He was an Eagle Scout, and graduated from Boston Latin School in 1944. While in the US Navy V12 program he attended Boston College and Tufts University, from which he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1946. Arthur graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1950, and did his Internship at St. Louis City Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Following his Internship, Arthur served as a Captain in the US Air Force Medical Corp as a Flight Surgeon during Korean War. Following the Korean War, he attended University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine where he received a Masters in Science (Medical) in Ophthalmology. While he was an Ophthalmic Research Fellow and Resident at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, he roomed at Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden, NJ where he met, as he often bragged, “the prettiest nurse in the whole hospital”, his wife of 56 years, Jeanne. A long time resident of Hingham, he and Jeanne raised their six children and established his own private medical practice, South Suburban Ophthalmology in 1971. During this time he was on staff at the South Shore Hospital for thirty two years. He did a Preceptorship in Ophthalmology with Trygve Gundersen, MD. Additionally, he founded the Eye Department at Lahey Clinic in Boston, and was on staff at Mass General and Mass Eye and Ear. Arthur was a gallant sports fan who never gave up on the Red Sox in August or the Patriots at Schaefer/Sullivan Stadium. He was a piper in the Kevin Barry Irish Bagpipe Band of Boston. A former member of the Hull Yacht Club and Hingham Yacht Club, he also loved the outdoors and spent summers sailing his small boat around Massachusetts Bay, and schussing the ski slopes of New England and Eastern Canada. In addition to his loving wife, Jeanne, he is survived by his children: Kathleen of Scituate, Diane Robinson and her husband Steve of Tiverton, RI, Barbara Forssell of Hingham, Jeff and his wife Jo of Winchester, Doug and his wife Carolyn of Scituate, David and his wife Aylene of Hingham. He was the loving and fun grandfather to Jeffrey, Sean, Michael, Emily, Scott, Tyler, Sarah, Christian, Olivia, and Amy. He is also survived by his sister, Miriam, his brother Don and his wife Peggy, and his cousin Jim Egan, and his late sister Marion Pryor. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. Hingham on Monday 3-7pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday morning at 10:15am prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Paul’s Church, Hingham at 11am. Interment will be private.
