Archie J. Walsh of Hingham, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2017 at the age of 89.
He was born in Boston, son of the late Frances and Archie K. Walsh of Mattapan, on February 18, 1928.
Archie was the beloved husband of the late Marilyn F. Walsh, the father of the late Kathleen Walsh of Hingham, Stephen Walsh of Carrabassett Valley, ME, Jack Walsh and his wife Donna of Westport Ma, Danny Walsh and long time partner Kate Sekerak of Plymouth Ma, and Mary Lou Dynan and her husband John of Norwell. He also leaves seven grandchildren.
Archie served in the US Navy on the USS Little Rock just after World War II, subsequently graduating from both Boston College and Boston State. He began teaching in East Boston in 1953. He took his last sick day in February 1958. He worked for 44 years as an educator, and had been the principle of the William E. Russell Elementary School in Dorchester since 1971.
Archie also donated his time, having coached Hingham Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. He was also an usher at Resurrection Parish from the time the doors opened in 1957 until just recently.
Archie was a sports enthusiast, supporting anyone with a “BC” logo, and he especially liked following the Hingham High hockey team. We have a feeling he will still be looking in on the games.
Archie’s home-away-from-home was in Long Reach, New Brunswick Canada, where he frequented since childhood. It was his special place.
In 1997 Mike Barnicle captured Archie’s aura in a Boston Globe article entitled “Three Cheers for Archie Walsh” on April 1, the day he retired:
In a life loaded with the pompous and the self-important, Archie Walsh, wearing shirtsleeves and a smile, represented approachable optimism to children whose lives are often ignored in a society where affluence is deemed a greater priority than achievement.
Visiting hours will be at the Pyne-Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. Hingham on Monday from 2-8 PM.
