Anna Galvanauskus Savage was born on January 15, 1904, in Kupiskiu, Lithuania. Anna valued hard work, school, and family. She taught herself how to read and write in Lithuanian and English; although she never received a formal education, she was extremely proud that her daughter and granddaughters were all college graduates. It is fitting that on her 100th birthday, a table was dedicated in her honor at Teachers College, Columbia University. Anna immigrated to Canada in 1929, and married John Savage in 1934. With her beloved daughter, also named Anna, they moved to Boston in 1941. Anna, or “Nanny” as most called her, was completely devoted to her family, and she leaves them with wonderful memories. When her granddaughters were young they loved to play in her kitchen and attic, accompany her on frequent trips to Boston, tend to her many plants and flowers, and eat her Lithuanian specialties. Later they enjoyed sitting and chatting, reading the papers, and watching “Wheel of Fortune” or figure skating at her daughter and son-in-law’s home, where she lived for the last ten years. Her six great-grandchildren sleep under her crocheted blankets. They will always remember playing cards with Nanny, and chatting with her as she intricately braided their hair. Anna’s extended family will cherish memories of summer vacations basking in her calm, joyous, knowing glow. In June 2006, Anna was the proud recipient of the Boston Post Golden Cane Award, which honors the oldest citizen of Hingham. Shortly thereafter, she was profiled in an article on centenarians in the Patriot Ledger. With her customary grace, humility, and good humor, she chuckled at the thought of becoming a mini-celebrity at the age of 102. Born before the plane and the telephone, and only shortly after electric bulb, Anna Savage brought flight, connection, and light to all of us. Donations in memory of Anna may be made to St. Peter Lithuanian Parish, 50 Orton Marotta Way, South Boston, MA 02127 or Old Colony Hospice, 1 Credit Union Way, Randolph, MA 02368.
