Mr. Alan G. Carr, founder and Chairman of 17 year old life sciences investment company H&Q Capital Management, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2003. He was 69. His career in the investment business spans five decades, and his depth of knowledge of the medical system helped him become a recognized leader in biotechnology and life sciences research, investing in and supporting companies doing critical work on the health care discoveries of the future. Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Mr. Carr was an avid and accomplished sailor, purchasing his first boat when he was 16 years old and for every summer after sailing in Hingham Bay, Cape Cod and Maine. Skipper, as he was known to his grandchildren, sought to serve his community in a variety of ways. His extensive volunteer and philanthropic activities included: The South Shore Hospital in Weymouth Massachusetts where he served as a Trustee for sixteen years and as Chairman from 1978 to 1980 ; The Jackson Laboratories in Bar Harbor Maine where he has served as a Board member since 1995 ; Derby Academy in Hingham Massachusetts where he served as a Trustee from 1964-1980, President of the Board 1969-1975 and Trustee Emeritus since 1980 ; an Overseer of the South Shore Conservatory of Music for twenty years; a member of the Parish of Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in Hingham. Mr. Carr was a graduate of Milton Academy and Yale University. He served in the United States Air Force in Tripoli, Libya from 1957-1960 and received an honorable discharge as First Lieutenant. Mr. Carr was a lifelong resident of Hingham Massachusetts. Mr. Carr is survived by his wife of 46 years Jane Cheever Carr, his daughters Wendy Ellison, Sarah Argiro and Andrea Hedrick, his son Gordon, and seven grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be celebrated Sunday, November 2, 2003 at 2:30 PM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 172 Main Street, Hingham.
