Swanton, Agnes M. (Pritchard) of Rockland, died May 6, 2014 at the age of 90.
Beloved wife for over 50 years of the late James L. Swanton. Devoted mother of James G. Swanton and his wife Claire of Abington, David M. Swanton and his wife Jill of Foxboro, Ellen M. Mulligan and her husband Robert of Boynton Beach, FL., Jerane A. Swanton of Rockland and Nancy J. O’Brien and her fiance Fred Foley of Braintree. Cherished “Nana” of James, Erica, Robert, James, Daniel, Michael, Brian and great-grandson Jacob. Loving sister of Alice Keymont of South Dennis, Betty Whittaker of Brockton and the late Joseph and Rita Pritchard. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Agnes was born and raised in South Boston and attended St. Brigid’s School. Agnes spent her childhood years swimming, playing tennis, skating and sledding at City Point. She met her husband, James, and started their family in South Boston and they were happily married for 50 years until James’ death in 1993. Castle Island remains one of the family’s favorite Sunday destinations. Agnes and James moved their young family to East Braintree in the 1950’s where they enjoyed backyard cookouts, Sunday dinners and holiday gatherings. In the later years, Agnes and James moved to Rockland where Agnes volunteered at the Rockland Library and the town preschool. She enjoyed a lifelong interest in music, the theater and was a diehard Boston sports fan. Her grace and devotion to her family could be witnessed in her smile and her warm, cheerful greeting to everyone she met, whether in the grocery store, around town or on her front porch. Agnes was a devoted wife and mother and taught her family the importance of love and faith in God.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 4-7 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital) Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 9 AM prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Clare’s Church, Braintree at 10 AM. Burial in Braintree Cemetery, Braintree.
In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Agnes may be made to the Mass Commission of the Blind, 600 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02111.
